Melatonin update

roller coaster
We were thinking of trying Melatonin to help Ethan get to bed at night. Over teh past few years he's got progressively worse and worse in terms of scripting, talking, yelling, playing - sometimes up to 3 hours before falling asleep. After reading up on some studies showing that a high percentage people on the spectrum have a melatonin defecit and benefitted from taking it , we asked around about it here: http://community.livejournal.com/autism/451036.html.

It's now been over 3 weeks and WOW what a difference since the very first night. He's asleep in 20-45 minutes every night. He very agreeably takes the 1mg cherry flavored sublingal (holds it under his tongue). We started with the low dose so we can always go up in the future. We went with GNC - just because of brand recognition and trust (http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133412).

Ethan is on no other medication. If you or your child on the spectrum is experiencing difficulty in sleep onset... it might be worth a try. It's really made a difference in our house at night.

thanks, I'll let you know how it works out
I am an adult with Aspergers and I have an undetermined sleep disorder. Had a sleep study done and everything. Couple trips to the teaching hospital. They attribute it to AS since I have nothing wrong with me. I am a light sleeper, I generally go off to sleep ok, it is staying there that's the problem. I am noise and light sensitive-processing disorder.

GNC makes pretty reliable products-I gotta go me some of that.

check out the article on the original post. You can try the 1mg, but it seems like most adults end up taking 3-5mg. GNC also makes 3 & 5mg tablets. I also saw 5mg peppermint chewables at Trader Joe's, and I trust their products as well. Good luck.

Glad it's working so well. I know it's doing great things for my son, and he was much more cooperative at school once he was getting some decent sleep. My son doesn't take any other meds than that as well.

Thanks :) I'm not sure about any secondary effects, Ethan never seemed to tired or cranky in the morning, but he's definitely getting 1-2 more hours of sleep a night, so that has to be a good thing.

melatonin
My son is 12. A big 12 at 5'10". We have been giving him melatonin for 2 years and it works great. A doctor wanted to put him on a blood pressure medication, that also helps with sleep, but I didn't feel right about it. I looked into melatonin and the dose that works for him is 6 mg at night. We give it to him in pill form and about 30 minutes later, he is sound asleep. He takes no other medications (except Zyrtec for allergies). I cannot say enough about melatonin. We have had no battles about getting up for school since we started giving it to him.
